Weekend in Oslo

Cara Tatina,

Dear Tatina,
when I wrote this post it was raining cats and dogs outside, so much so it felt like October instead of June! So what a better time than that to take you with me to visit Oslo, in Norway, where I recently spent a long weekend. First of all, I have to say, it's one of the most expensive places I have ever been! This is the main reason why we went self-catering, just so we could save a little.

We spent three days wandering around the city, soaking up the atmosphere, trying to learn a few Norwegian words and also to get the grip of the new currency...I have to say I was fascinated by the tall buildings, by the parks and gardens dotted around the city, the huge cruise ships by the harbour facing the fjords and of course, those scrumptious pastries we enjoyed every morning for breakfast...and not just for breakfast, actually! I knew they were going to be good as a few weeks before I'd seen this programme by this couple of Geordie chefs who call themselves "Hairy Bikers" who took a "bakeation" across Europe and their journey started in Norway...I love this part of travelling, where you discover new foods and flavours, I always have to try something new and I when I am abroad I truly enjoy exploring local food shops. Gosh, we do talk about food quite a lot on this blog, don't we?!

Patisseries and bakeries aside, if you visit Oslo you wouldn't want to miss the new Opera House, what a stunning piece of architecture. The building represents a huge iceberg emerging from the sea. Outside there's a large ramp which starts from the bottom and goes all the way up and round it, eventually turning into the roof. It's cool because you can literally walk on it and then you find yourself on the roof, and it's so white, just like ice. Inside, the foyer it's a massive open air space with an amazing view over the outside.

E la prossima volta dove si va? Qualche suggerimento?! Bacioni e a presto tatina cara!

Where shall we go next time? Any suggestions?! Big kisses, speak to you soon!

Urbino universitaria e San Patrizio: accoppiata vincente! // St Patrick & Urbino: a perfect match!

Colazione inclusa. E cosa volere di più?
Sabato 17 marzo pomeriggio, io e Ale ci siamo infilati in macchina, destinazione Urbino.
You & Me bedroom

The Palazzo Ducale

You know Tatina? Sometimes I would like to ask you to stop publishing  this kind of pictures... just because after seeing them, I feel like I want to leave IMMEDIATELY! Just a few hours to put something into my bag, prepare money and documents, and.. let's go! But... this is just a dream, I have to stay home, at least till my next holiday, which will be next September. Did I tell you I've already bought the tickets to London? No excuses, then: keep one day free to visit us and do something together.

But, apart from dreaming about my next trip, I'm always trying to arrange some quick tour nearby Bertinoro, and last 17th March, I took the occasion to do something I'd been planning since four years ago, when my sister started studying in a really beautiful place: Urbino. It is located on a hill, exactly like Bertinoro, but it's more ancient and reach on art and people.
After a careful research on the internet, I finally found this nice B&B Albornoz: four delicious rooms, one different from the other, complete with a small kitchen and  our own bathroom. Breakfast was included, too. It was perfect!

Walking through the narrow streets

So, last Saturday 17th March, Ale and I left in the afternoon, and reached Urbino in about one hour and half. It was quite easy to find a car parking, and even the B&B, since the two owners, Pier Angelo and Nadia, recognized us immediately: a couple standing in the middle of the square, carrying a bag and looking at the map!! Pier Angelo and Nadia have also a daughter, Kakie, and thei look a really nice family: after spending a few minutes with them, you can already understand that they are sociable, people-lovers, and very kind persons.
After leaving our luggages in our bedroom, called You and Me, we kept in touch with Valentina and immediately started walking through those beautiful narrow streets. The first stop we made during our super-quick tour, was at Albornoz Fortress. It is on the top f the hill, and from the grassy park surrounding it you can see an amazing landscape. Moreover, it was sunset time, and you can imagine how romantic and breathtaking it was!

Then we went on exploring the town, through narrow and craggy ways, wa saw the Cathedral, many churches, the main square and the wonderful Ducale Palace, built by Federico da Montefeltro Duke. Do you remember who's Federico da Montefeltro? That man whose portraits are always taken by his left side, and his nose was oddly squared, like it had been cut! Well, actually it was cut by the same duke after being disfeatured during a battle: he lost his right eye, and to be sure that he coud still have a good visual on both sides, he made part of his nose be cut. I've also recently read about him on a book telling about the Florence Pazzi conjure: it seems that this is the reason why all his portraits show just one side of the Duke's face.

Anyway, we could admire the palace from outside, but, due to some stupid legends which forbid to students to enter before graduating, we couldn't enter: we'll be able to look at the beautiful decorations after Valentina's graduation, then!
Moreover, in the distance we could see also the Federico's Mausoleum, where his tomb and his son's are located.
Waking through the ways, we even passed over Raffaello's native house!
Valentina told us about the sorroundings, reach of nature, beautiful landscapes: it's also possible to walk through the famous Gola del Furlo, where I'll go for sure one day.
And did you know that even the poet Giovanni Pascoli studied at Urbino? At the university entrance there's even a bust dedicated to him.

From the promenade we were walking on, we could see the two big tents on the Market square (Mercatale): they were hosting the Irish festival that very week. In the first tent some concerts were held, while in the second one you could eat typical Irish food.

The Irish Festival
But before going there, we decided to head for a drink: we found a nice bar, where they gave us so much food that we were almost full. That was good, since, after getting the Irish festival, there was a such long queue, we could't imagine when we would have been served some food. So we decided to look for a restaurant and try some typical food from that area. We had do walk a long sloping way before reaching a quiet but nice pizzeria almost on the top of the hill. Since truffle is quite famous around there, Valentina and I decided to share a truffle pizza, and I really enjoyed it! I could have taken also the "crescenza sfogliata" wich is a sort of flat bread, reach in grease, or the Casciotta, a local cheese, but none of them cought my attention.

Back to the festival, we realized we missed the Irish band, but another band from Wales was starting playing. The singer wa so nice to explain us -even in Italian!- the meaning of some ballads. It was so interesting, and we also had the chance to drink a Kilkenny (you know, I don't particularly lve Guinnes)...

When the tent was too full of people, we decided to go out to breath some fresh (really fresh!) air , and we headed to the main square. Valentina took us to a very nice place, the Bosom Pub. The inside was wonderful, the brick walls were so carachteristic, the music wasn't too loud, prices were very cheap, and we absolutely enjoyed our night out, dancing and chatting!
The day after we woke up with a delicious breakfast kindly offered by our hosts: yogurth, milk, fruit juice, and biscuits... All delicious!

After a last and quick meeting with Valentina in the main square, we took our way back to Bertinoro.
I swear I really enjoyed this trip, and I want absolutely come back to Urbino, visit it deeply and stay some days to appreciate all its arts and nature!

Haere Mai - Welcome to New Zealand! Benvenuti in Nuova Zelanda!

Cara Tatina,

Dear tatina,
I am really intrigued by the book you were telling me about in your last post, though I have been looking for the English version and I cannot find it...I think a well deserved trip to our favourite book store Feltrinelli is due the next time I am coming to Italy! I do miss our trips to bookstores, we always used to go together when we were in uni and spend ages in there!
On the same nostalgic note, I cannot help thinking last year round about this time I was going to New Zealand for two weeks, what an amazing trip it was. We had been invited to our dear friends Owen & Toni's wedding and we jumped to the chance of going for the holiday of a lifetime. I remember after we finished paying for our wedding, we started saving for New Zealand straight away, and it turned out to be a sort of second honeymoon for us.
So I'd love to take the chance to share this trip with you and our readers with a series of posts, mainly through pictures, as it's such a beautiful country and it truly speaks for itself!

Our journey starts from Auckland. At the airport we soon picked up a little automatic red car who would soon become our faithful companion in our 2 weeks adventure.  I still remember the warmth of the sun as soon as we came out of the airport and the relief of changing into new clothes once we got to the hotel. A bit strange wearing flip-flops in March, but I could easily get used to it! Needless to say we were so knackered after 48 hours travelling and full of jet-lag, yet we managed a good walk around Devonport, a small town facing Auckland.

The day after we set to explore Auckland which was a short ferry trip away. We couldn't believe how hot it was and to be honest we did spend most of our time enjoying the shade in one of the several coffee shops the city was filled with.

Now, call me silly, but one of the highlight of the day for me was to see people crossing the street diagonally, I'd never seen it before! So much so I had to take a picture, of course! Actually, I asked Stuart to do it as I was embarrassed people may think I was a weirdo, ah ah!

Next time we'll be leaving Auckland to travel towards Taouranga, getting closer and closer to Gisborne where our friends were getting married.

Gita in Yorkshire - Day trip to Yorkshire

Cara Tatina,

Dear Tatina,
thank you so much for sharing these beautiful pictures of your holiday! You always capture those special little details so well, you know I love your photos!
I did start reading Meet me at the cupcake cafe' last week and I am already so enthusiastic about Jenny Colgan's books that I want to read them all and tell everyone about them!

Guess where I have been? Stuart & me had a day off yesterday and we went to Harrogate, in Yorkshire, for the day. I took a few pictures and just wanted to share them with you here on our blog. On the way there we stopped in a little market town called Oatley. It was raining, for a change, but it was just as well as we found a cosy place for lunch, it was half cafe' half flower shop, all decorated for Valentine's Day. We enjoyed a lovely creamy courgettes soup and a warm brownie that melted in your mouth.

Oatley was full of cute little shops, I couldn't resist taking a few pictures of some of the windows...

saponi da farti venire l'acquolina!

fancy meeting at the cupcake cafe'?!

There was still some snow around, especially in the gardens, yet not as much as you have where you are!

Hope you enjoyed the trip my dear Tatina...take care and speak to you soon!
