Cosa metto in valigia? // What shall I put in my bag?

How lovely to drink tea and eat muffins chatting together

Can't wait to visit this huge Christmas market in manchester city center!!!

___________________________

Tatina cara, you visited such wonderful places! Besides the cottage (and I must admit that only the kitchen pic would worth it!), the landscapes are beautiful, so English, as you said. And I'm also happy that you could enjoy your holiday, laughing, playing and escaping from the everyday life matters.
Now I want you to tell me all the rest: want to see all the pics, to hear all what happened... sometimes written correspondence tends to kill... with curiosity!! :-)

However, you know very well that I won't wait too much: if you don't answer me in a few days... well... I'll be forced to come over and hear everything from your mouth! Oh, yes, it's time to leave, and next week I'll be leaving to join you in Manchester!
When I think about the day when I bought the fly tickets, it seems so far! When I was dreaming about a love-trip with Ale, spending four days with you two, going out together, and doing what friends' couples usually do. But in the end I have to leave alone.
Anyway, you know I don't care about travelling by myself: it's always a good chance to meet people, to chat with somebody new, and exchange opinions for a few hours. I'm a friendly person after all!
And in case I don't find anyone as friendly as me... I'll have a book to read during the flight.

Well, as I told you some time ago, I usually pack up just one day before leaving, putting inside my bag all I can find, sometimes forgetting something...but not this time! Since I would like to leave quite "light", keeping some space in the luggage for souvenirs and presents, I'm planning my day-by-day apparel, as you suggested before leaving to Greece. I'm sure it'll work!
I love bringing home pieces of places I visited, like souvenirs and fridge magnets. I need a fridge magnet of Manchester: last year I bought one, but it hadn't nothing to do with the city. So... I need a new one!
Moreover, since Christmas is close, It'll be full of Christmas markets, decorations, etc. and it won't be difficult for me to find some gift to be deliverd in the most joyous day of the year.
The only kind of purchase I have to avoid is a pair of shoes, and I hope you'll help me to resist to such a temptation (or my husband's going to cut off all my credit and debit cards!).
So, while a big pile of clothes is waiting for me to be ironed (and be put on my bag), I've already got through my things-to-do list:
  • to buy the train ticket : check
  • to buy some sterlings : check
  • To put in stock some food for both Ale and our cat, Leo: to be done this morning
  • to check-in online: to be done one day before departure
And finally I'll be able to reach you!!!!!!
So SEE you soon Tatina, this time for real! :-)

Weekend in Staffordshire

Dear Tatina,
I love how you are always open to experiments, especially the ones to do with food and cooking! I remember that time you made cheese from scratch, it was delicious, so tasty! I wish I was more like you, it must be so satisfying eating something you have grown or made with your own hands!

I am sorry I have been away for a while, as you know I was away last weekend as we hired a cottage with some friends, do you remember I gave you a sneaky preview some time ago? Stuart and me had the Friday off work so we could get to the cottage for lunch time and familiarise ourselves with the place. The cottage itself was beautiful, with a huge kitchen, cosy bedrooms, a real fire in the lounge and a massive collection of books for the guests to enjoy.

Friday evening we all had dinner together, I made a huge pot of chilli con carne, which went down a treat. Then each couple (4 in total) had a go at making a cocktail for everyone, Stuart and me made mojitos, tasty!

Cocktail making was fun! We also played Twister - or shall I say we fell over playing Twister! and we also played "Wink Murder", do you know this party game? One player is assigned the role of murderer, with the ability to "murder" other players by making eye contact and winking at them; another player is the detective. If a player is winked at, they fake sudden death and are removed from the game. Other players are forbidden from winking. The objective of the murderer is to murder as many people as possible and for the detective to spot who the murderer is. Nobody knows who the detective or the murderer is, apart from themselves. Stuart kept on cheating and pretending to be the murderer when he wasn't, but that didn't spoil it, we just laughed even more!

The next day, on Saturday, we all needed some fresh air so we went for a long walk, about 8 km through canals, fields and narrow paths.

After a short drive to the nearby village of Froghall, we started off walking down the picturesque Caldon Canal, the colours of the trees surrounding us were amazing, the camera really doesn't do them justice.

The temperature was mild, in fact we soon starting taking our coats off, I think we all had too many layers thinking it would be a chilly morning...on the contrary, it was pretty warm and we were all surprised considering the time of the year. We were really lucky though as the rain stayed away, even though it did rain the night before and the paths were very muddy. And I know well because towards the end of the walk I managed to trip on a stone that was sticking out of the path and I fell right in the mud...nice! I just started laughing though, luckily I reacted quickly and put my hands down and didn't hurt myself.

so true!
so British!

We also made some friends along of the way...

Next time I will tell you about our visit to the Monkey Forest and the Trentham Gardens where we went on Sunday :-) see you soon!

 --------------------------------

Cara Tatina,

(e l'unico...) / My first mushroom...and the only one...

Tatina, eccolo!!
Buona giornata!
Hai visto com'è cresciuto?
                                            ----------------------------------------------------------------
Tatina, here it is!!! I've just picked it, waiting for slicing it into a delicious salad!
Even if it's the only one for the moment, its little brothers are pushing, but none has still grown up.
A little shower with fresh water and... let's cross our fingers waiting for the next one.
Have a nice day!!

Piccoli funghi crescono / my little mushroom...

Tatina cara,

Il piccolo funghetto e tutti i fratellini attorno / the little mushroom and its brothers around

I piccoli funghetti puntano e spingono!!
Eccolo!!

Al mattino /in the morning

E la sera è già cresciuto! / and after 12 hours it's grown up!

Gnammy!

                                                         --------------------------------

Tatina cara!!
how gorgeous are fireworks! You made me remember when I was a baby, and my grandpa used to take me to watch them... and I was so afraid! Yes, right, I wasn't so eager: I loved those colors and light falls, but the noise was so scary! For this reason I've never come back to watch fireworks: I like to watch them from a reasonable distance, far from the crowd and the noise, only admiring those bright fountains and those crackling stars sparkling in the sky, giving joy and astonishment to everyone!
It's incredible how a childish shock can affect our adult lives.
You know, when I was a baby there was another thing I was afraid of: my granny's washing machine! When I entered the bathroom and heard the machine almost starting the final spin-dryer section, I almost wet myself on the attempt to hurry up and leave the room as soon as possible! But I had to face that fear, since nowadays I need to use it at least once a week -and I would also snort now, but, you know, it's female stuff... we must deal with things like this soon or later, mustn't we?
Talking about female stuff... shall we talk about gardening? I'm a total disaster! I can't say I have a green thumb: I've got a brown thumb, brown like soil, like dried plants, like trees in winter, and I can prove that I mustn't touch plants! But. However. There are some plants -which are not real plants- that don't need to be "touched". Maybe... I can try...
So one month ago, while walking through the supermarket shelves, I found this cute mushroom box: you can choose the kind of mushrooms, and grow them up at home. I chose the champignon one, only because I love champignons, and took the box at home.
The instructions were really easy: wet the soil, distribute it over the straw, put the cap over the box and keep it in a 15-18°C temperature room, which means that our house was perfect -until we would decide to turn the heating on!
I followed the instructions. Not as it was a cooking recipe, that I'm used to modify even before trying the original one. It was a mushroom, not a cake, it was a living thing, and I couldn't change rules, not in this case.
But after a few days, the box hadn't changed. Just a veil of mildew was covering part of the soil...mmm... bad sign (that was what the instructions said). I was almost demoralized for such a failure. However, after another four days, I gave a look to the box and.... the miracle of life!!! Tens of little mushrooms were pushing and jumping to grow more than their brothers. It was so exciting!
It would have been a fun idea to tape the mushrooms growth, but we are too lazy, and I just took some pics, to show you that even I can cultivate something... the only thing that I have to do... is doing nothing!! :-)
And now, can't wait for my first champignon to be sliced on a huge salad, together with olives, bell peppers, tuna and lettuce...yummy...

Bonfire Night

Cara Tatina,
this weekend here in the UK we celebrate Bonfire Night, also known as Guy Fawkes' Night, and I just wanted to tell you a bit more about it.

Bonfire Night is a yearly event dedicated to bonfires, fireworks and celebrations. Bonfire Night is associated with the tradition of Guy Fawkes' Night and its celebrated annually on or near the 5th November.

You may remember about Guy Fawkes' Night from our English school textbooks: its history begins with the events of the 5th November 1605, when Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords. Celebrating the fact that King James I had survived the attempt on his life, people lit bonfires around London, and months later the introduction of the Observance of 5th November Act enforced an annual public day of thanksgiving for the plot's failure.

"Remember, remember, the fifth of November, Gunpowder Treason and Plot"
rhyme sang around the bonfire

There are several events going on round Manchester this weekend, in fact we may be going to see some fireworks tonight (weather permitting!) at a nearby park, where there will be a funfair and a bonfire, too. I hope there is a stall selling candy floss, I have not had it in ages! Last time must have been in 2008 when my dear friend Stefania came to visit for a long weekend.

Bonfire Night 2008 with my friend Stefania
We got tickets to see the Fireworks Spectacular at the Lancashire Cricket Ground...it was freezing cold but we loved it, the fireworks were amazing and we couldn't help a few "ooooh" and "aaaah", as you will be able to hear from this video!

I just love fireworks and I am really looking forward to see some tonight!
Hope you have a nice weekend, too, whatever you have planned :-)

Cara Tatina,

1200 miles apart goes international

Dear Tatina,
I love the idea of writing our blog in English as well, I am sure we would reach a wider audience, but I do believe we should still write in Italian as well, especially because you do it so beautifully and I would hate to miss out on reading your posts in Italian!

It would be useful to hear from our readers about this...please don't be shy, tell us what you think!

I really enjoyed your last post, thanks for taking me to these lovely places around Italy. What a lovely way to enjoy a weekend away and taste some delicious wine! Just like you said, the choice is amazing, where to start first?! Will definitely keep these in mind for the next time I am coming to Italy, that's for sure. While we are on the subject, there are rumours of a Summer holiday in Tuscany next year with my in-laws, nothing definite yet but we are talking about it :-) I have been to Tuscany before, with my parents when I was younger and with Stuart a few years ago...we went camping near Grosseto and since I didn't have a tent, Stu borrowed it off one of his mates and carried it all the way from the UK on the plane!
I have been to Umbria as well, but a long time ago, I was quite small and can't remember much about it, so would be really good to go back, maybe together, like you said!

I was thinking...you and me really love travelling, don't we? Well, we already know where your next trip will be (Manchester!!!) and I can't wait for it...but just before you come to visit I have a weekend away planned with some friends. and I wanted to give you a sneaky peak of where we are going. It's eight of us in total and we have hired a cottage not too far away, in Kingsley Holt, Staffordshire.

The Cow Shed - our cottage
can't wait to relax in this lounge!

Kingsley Holt is an ideal for exploring the great outdoors in the Southern Peak District and Staffordshire Moorlands, which a lot of people say are one of Britain’s best kept secrets. Riding, cycling and walks are in abundance locally, and there are some lovely market towns such as Ashbourne, Cheadle, Leek and Bakewell, just a short drive away. We are definitely planning a few walks and maybe a visit to the nearby monkey park, not to forget a few visit to the local pub! We are going a week tomorrow, I will make sure I take loads of pictures to post when I am back!

Cara Tatina,
