Downton Abbey

che bella scorpacciata di montagna mi hai fatto fare! E dall'entusiasmo che traspira dai tuoi racconti si capisce che vi siete divertiti e rilassati tantissimo, avete fatto proprio bene! Chissà che un giorno non riusciamo a fare una vancanza tutti e quattro assieme?! Sarebbe bello!

Dear Tatina,
what an amazing holiday you have had, you can tell by reading your diary that you have had a marvellous time together, you  both deserve it! You never know, one day it'd be lovely to maybe go away all four of us together and you could take us for some nice walks!

Tu mi hai portato in giro per posti meravigliosi, mentre io vorrei portarti indietro nel tempo, a poco prima che scoppiasse la Prima Guerra Mondiale, perchè vorrei parlarti di Downton Abbey, una serie televisiva inglese in costume scritta da Julian Fellowes (ha scritto anche Gosford Park) . Quando sono tornata a casa per Natale mia madre mi ha detto che la serie era iniziata anche in Italia, forse ne avrai già sentito parlare.

From a journey between them beautiful mountains to a journey back in time, because today I wanted to talk to you about Downton Abbey, a British tv period drama written by Julian Fellowes, the same writer behind Gosford Park. I believe they have been showing the first series in Italy fro last December as my mum was telling me about it when I went home for the Christmas holidays.

Downton Abbey (Highclere Castle in Hampshire)

Ambientata nella fittizia Downton Abbey, tenuta di campagna nello Yorkshire del Conte e della Contessa di Grantham, la serie segue le vite dell'aristocratica famiglia Crawley e dei loro servitori a partire dal 15 aprile 1912, data di affondamento del RMS Titanic. Alla notizia della tragedia, la famiglia Crawley è sconvolta nell'apprendere che il cugino del conte, James Crawley, e suo figlio Patrick, erede alla loro proprietà, nonché alla cospicua dote della Contessa Cora, sono deceduti nel naufragio. Nuovo beneficiario diventa il giovane Matthew, cugino di terzo grado della famiglia e avvocato a Manchester. I Crawley, soprattutto la Contessa Madre Violet, inorridiscono al pensiero che ad una persona "che lavora", senza la minima intenzione ad adattarsi alla vita aristocratica da loro condotta, spettino i loro interi averi.

Just to give you a quick brief, the series is set on the fictional estate of Downton Abbey in North Yorkshire, home of the Crawley family, who's struck by a tragedy when the future heir dies in the sinking of the RMS Titanic. This means the estate will now be inherited by a third cousin, Matthew, a solicitor from Manchester. The story unfolds from here, showing us the life of the family and their servants.

Io adoro questo genere di film soprattutto se sono inglesi...mi affascinano i costumi, i dialoghi, gli accenti...è stato davvero amore a prima vista! Uno dei miei personaggi preferiti è la Contessa Madre Violet, intrepretata dalla bravissima  attrice Maggie Smith...non potevano scegliere una persona migliore per questa parte, è proprio una di quelle signore di una volta, ed è buffo vedere come reagisce alle nuove tecnologie come il telefono, l'elettricità o le sedie girevoli...all'introduzione di parole nuove, come weekend...e ci regala anche certe perle di saggezza come quando dice a sua nipote: "Sono una donna, Mary, posso essere contraria quanto voglio".

I simply love period drama, especially British. I am extremely fascinated and deeply in love with the costumes, the dialogues, the accents...needless to say it was love at first sight! One of my favourite characters is Lady Violet, Countess of Grantham, played by the beautiful actress Maggie Smith. This part is simply perfect for her and I love how she expresses Lady Violet's reactions to the first technologies like phone, electricity and swivel chairs...o new words like "weekend"...and the pearl of wisdom dotted round the series, like when she says to her niece "I am a woman, Mary, I can be as contrary as I choose"..love it!
